Live Like a Local: Exploring Lookout Creek

  by Samantha, Chattanooga Vacation Rentals

As many folks know, Chattanooga is nicknamed The Scenic City of the South. Rightly so, I say! What most don’t know, though, is that Chattanooga has more beauty to offer than sweeping vistas from atop any of our mountains and ridges. There is a hidden, more introverted side to Chattanooga that - I dare say - rivals any mountain top vantage point, and that can only be experienced from water level.

While the Tennessee River defines Chattanooga proper, the region in general is laced with slow, shaded creeks. Many of these are tributaries of the Tennessee River; others feed the Hiwassee, Ocoee and Sequatchie Rivers. All offer both locals and visitors alike a much welcome respite from the sultry summer heat and humidity here in the South.

One of my personal favorites is Lookout Creek. This hidden gem winds its way for 19 navigable miles along the western base of - you guessed it! - Lookout Mountain. Accessible via many different points along its route, once you are on the water it feels as if you have entered another world; a large portion of the banks are undeveloped National Park land, private nature preserve, and private farm land. It is not uncommon for discreet paddlers to sight deer, coyote, fox, and even beaver families working on their dams, as well as green and blue heron, wood ducks, kingfishers, osprey, eagles and many types of hawks. If you pay really close attention, you’ll even catch glimpse of many species of turtles, frogs, snakes and fish!

While staying with us here at Chattanooga Vacation Rentals, please know that our friends at Rock/Creek Outfitters Rentals and Outpost have offered all of our guests 15% off on kayak and SUP rentals so that you can enjoy living like a Chattanooga local for a few days. If you prefer, you can even request a guided tour. For information on transportation or delivery of rental gear, please call Rock Creek Rentals at 423-643-1522 or online at Rock Creek Rentals

Whether you choose to kayak, SUP, swim and/or fish* you are certainly in for a treat! Definitely include your camera, but I encourage you to consider leaving your music and speakers at home, especially if you do hope to see some of the critters who call Lookout Creek home. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
